I was playing Monopoly with my family and I thought that our dear server lacked long-term board games like Monopoly. I didn't want to copy Monopoly and bring it to the server (though that could be a possibilty) and decided to think of my own board game. After a month of thinking and double checking I thought of The Conqueror A long-term board game that can be played over a period ranging from 30 minutes to a couple of days. Its a strategy and land conquering game.

The basic rules are as follows:
There are 3 types of resources: Gold, Wood and Food
There are 4 types of spaces: Plains, Forest, Lake and Rich Ground
There are 4 types of buildings: Towns, Cities, Forest Huts and Fishermen Huts
Every player starts with a bit of gold, wood, food and a bit of territory
When its your turn you can buy a territory or build a structure
You can buy territories adjacent to your own (with Gold)
You can build structures on your territory (depending on if its a plains, forest or lake)
You build Towns and Cities on Plains (they give you gold)
You build Forest Huts on Forests (they give you wood)
You build Fishermen Huts on Lakes (they give you food)
Whenever its your turn, collect the resources (depending on what structures you build)
You need gold, wood and food to build structures
You can have an unlimited amount of structures
You cant have more then one building occupying the same space
You cant buy territories that are diagonal of your other territories
You cant buy territories that someone else bought.
When every territory has been taken, its game over.
The player with the most territory at the end wins the game.

This is a work in progress and there will be more rules such as taking other peoples territories, the exact prices of territories and buildings and pictures of the experimental board I built but for now I just wanted to let people know.

Hmmm... well that sounds cool, but I'm a bit confused. Is this something ingame? If so, how do we plan to make these complex structures work in a way that's easy for players to set up, and impossible to cheat? ^^:

The board would have to built in-game. Here are some pictures:

This is just an experimental board, which can easily be made into 10x10 or bigger for longer games.

The grassy areas are plains
The areas with the tree are forset
The water areas are lake
The one in the middle is rich land (anything can be built on it)

There wont be any dice needed because there wont be any moving around.

As for the buildings... Its preety easy to code some /clone commands from built in templates (which I will have available in a day or so)

There will probably be some kind of hub with buttons that take away resorses and place buildings in the space chosen. The redstone for it might take a little while to build but its fairly easy.

Haha, have to stop you there... we're a 1.6.4 server AND with no Bukkit AND with only Forge Essentails World Control at our disposal (which is extremely limited), so we will not have access to the /clone command in any scenario. ^^;

But the concept looks interesting, though.

I've heard we are going into 1.7/1.8 where the /clone command is available. In the case that we are NOT going into 1.7 or 1.8 there is also the /setblock command which is avavible in 1.6.4 and allows for sructure making (though it would take a A LOT more time to build)

Ah yes... /setblock. First introduced in Minecraft 1.7.2. Razz

And we will eventually go into 1.7, and I am making preparations for that migration so it doesn't hit us like a bus. But even so, there's no guarantee that that may actually happen "soon" given the pace of development of that mod.

So for the time being, try and think of a variant of this game that can be done manually or with simple redstone. Smile

Ok, I thought that /setblock was first introduced in 1.6.2... Silly me Razz

Right, ill try to think of some other way to make this happen or, at least until we hit 1.7 ill try to make some features like the board a bit bigger for longer gameplay, but I dont think this can be done manually unless the structures are less then 3 blocks each but that would take away the detail I put into making these. Anyway the only thing we can do to make this automatic is to wait (at least for now)

And on the margin, do I have your permission to begin making the board on the server (so you can import it in to 1.7 later) or maybe wait until we are at the new update and do you like this idea or is it just another one of those lame ideas nobody likes?

haha, well I'm not much of a gamer in general, even board games, so I wouldn't be qualified to say whether this was "lame" or not. XD

As for making the board, sure you can go ahead... so long as it's within the Ark border, it will carry over into the 1.7 world. Try to keep it close to the New Fairgrounds so we can keep it as part of a general play area, unless you have a specific need for it somewhere (as say a tourist attraction in some town or something). ^^

Ok, ill try to make as close to the fairgrounds as possible and then we will have a talk about in the future when the server hits 1.7 but for now thank you, ill be posting some other pictures shortly for people get a kind of preview. Ill get straight to work on it tomorrow.

No rush, we're still way ahead of schedule. Smile

Now note there IS another alternative....

You can work on it in singleplayer in Creative (and in Minecraft 1.7), and then send the save file to me (or post it on a dropbox or Google Drive link or something). I can then import it wherever, and keep all the necessary things in place so that it can work as soon as we upgrade to 1.7. ^^

Cia, we have a problem. Because of wireless redstone and teleporting, I cant type the coordinates into the command blocks because there will be no way of me knowing where you will paste the game. You would have to type the coordinates in manualny when the board is imported to suit each of the control rooms

Is that ok with you?

That's actually okay, so long as it's a base vanilla command, the coordinates will automatically update based on its new positioning in MCEdit. It's actually very handy. Smile

Even if it didn't, yeah I wouldn't have too much of a problem changing them manually. Unless they're too many, in which case... T__T

Ok, I'll carry on bulding my redstone then. It might take a little longer because of school starting but ill try to handle the small board within a month... And FYI there will be about 500 command blocks for the small board, 950 for the meduim board and 1700 for the large board. (well unless we go into 1.7.10 [clone command] in which case there will be a lot less) There is a lot of work to be done!

I hope it wont lag the server! Razz

Well then... ill program it to use the /clone command. That should cut the amount of commands down to 150 for the small 5X5 board around 250 for the 8X8 board and 400 for the 15X15 board. Ill try to shorten it down to the least possible amount... but I cant really promise anything.

The /clone command was added in 1.7.10 (I researched it this time)

I have an idea that will shorten it down to minimum command blocks.

50 for the small board
128 for the meduim board
288 for the large board

Only 1 command block will be running at one time, but in this version its possible to place a building in an unowned space or a place occupied by a different player. The people playing would have to kinda play the trust game with each other for everything to go smoothly, like taking the correct amount of resources because i'd need more command blocks for everything to become automated.

If that is still too much I can shorten it by half but it would mean people would have to manually place their mark as a sign it is their territory but thats ONLY in case there is even less command blocks allowed then the ones I've stated above.

So breathe easily... I got everything under control Smile

Hmm, you say that, but run the risk of investing a lot of time into this, only to have it go bust if it lags the server beyond repair. I'd prefer that no redstone gizmo use any more than 50 redstone signals at the same time, to avoid issues like that.

Again, if you can come up with a simplied manual version of this game, we can build it now and fine tune it with redstone later at little risk to your time. Smile

I have lots of time and too little to do anyway so even if it DOES lag on the server, then I can change it around a bit and make it a map for download.

Besides:

a) Im having fun building it.

b) Its a challenge for me to overcome (That way I can prove to myself im not a noob Razz )

c) As I said above, I can use it as a download map.

d) There is still a chance it wont lag the server

e) My friends will adress me as their new king! (jk)

Even if someone from the future told it isnt gonna work out, I would still continue to build it no matter what!

I completely dropped the City for the sake of simplicity and made practically manual exept for placing down the structures found above.

The wool colour can change depending on who placed the building, but that might also get dropped to save the server a bit of lag
