Server Mascots - Alta and Pico

Hey all,

This will be the thread I'll use to track the progress on our soon-to-be server mascots, Alta (Big Sister) and Pico (Little Brother).  I already posted a preview image in the drawing thread, which can be found here...

Now it's time to really get them finalized.  ^^

Anyway, posts will be added here whenever I am able to work on these, though bear in mind I am SLOW with artwork. XD

Fanart, feedback and recolorings are also welcomed. ^^

Anyway, before I can color Alta and Pico, I have to do their lineart first.  Lineart is essentially a higher-quality retracing of the original sketchwork, to make it easier to color within the lines.  

Below is the lineart for Alta.  My old Samsung Tablet's drawing apps only have a max resolution of about 2560px, so it doesn't leave much room for smooth lines.  The image on the left is the hand-drawn lineart using the tablet, and it definitely shows a lot of pixelation.  The lineart on the right is the original lineart traced in Inkscape to produce a vector image.  The result is a bit thick and imprecise, but it's also clean and [best of all] very scalable, meaning the image can be as large as we want it to be.  ^^

I'd like to see which one people prefer I color with....

I like the left one better, since it's more drawing-like and compared to the right one is thinner and more precise, still considering that the right one is not that much worse and that it can be resized (feature that could really come in handy in the future) I think that you should colorize the right one.

I'd say the one on the right - as you said, it's cleaner and easier to work with. I also prefer how it looks.

In actuality, I can still do a few tricks to get the one on the right to look a little finer still (it's just a matter of playing around with the Trace Bitmap setting in Inkscape, which by default is a little finicky.  But yeah, if I can nail it down to be extra perfect, it'll definitely be the one to colour.  ^^

Before I do, though, I'll try to get Pico's lineart done next.  

Okay, Pico's lineart is complete!  I'm glad he ended up having a very simple design, since that allows for very simple (and faster) lineart. XD

Here's the two together, now with much better vector tracing using Inkscape, so the results arent quite so clunky...

Needs more fire... But otherwise ok Cia.... It would be cool though if the characters would have more life and motion in them, like as if they were coming to life inside the picture.

Just my opinion, I'm not totally sure what you plan on doing but whatevz.

I really needed to conceptualize them (and their clothing) first before i can put them into any kind of exotic poses or backgrounds, so that's why the image is so plain. You can think of this as a kind of reference picture if you will. ^^

Ohh! Not to shabby! I like the looks on Alta, gives off a very merchant-ish vibe.

She's something of a Jane-of-all-Trades, so she might have a talent for barter. But mainly she's a kind of hunter-gatherer and medicine woman. ^^

Now the next step involves planning out the colors to be used, or literally a "color map".  Not much in terms of shading or details here, just a paint bucket tool and fill-in-the-blanks to make sure the colors make sense. I wanted earth tones (plus easier camouflage) for Alta, and a simple but exotic, almost monk-like, look for Pico.  ^^

Cute! I see you adopted a very ciabatta's style for Alta, now I wonder who's pico based on.

Aye, Alta is kind of the "free" version of my persona, in case one day I'm no longer able to use the MobTalker art.

As for Pico, he's based on a good old friend of mine who loves pigs. ^^

In hindsight, that shade green might be too strong and her boots I'm not content with, so I may be changing them slightly in the next iteration. At least Pico is spot-on, right down to his little button shoes... sometimes simple is better. ^^

Just the colour a bit, no worries. There's too much green already, so a swap to a tan or light brown is in order.

Okay, preliminary shading complete.  ^^
I may fix this a bit later using an image editing program (GIMP), but other than that I think the image is fairly usable as is for reference purposes.  I fixed up the color issues for Alta, so her hat and boots no longer blend with her tunic.  

Wow, this is really turning out nicely.

I... don't have much specific to add, especially thanks to the late hour, but keep up the good work!
