I Want Some Feedback for a Game

Post by Raddaman8000 on Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:58 pm

I made a text based game back in the summer called "Wandering and Shrinking".  A lot of you probably already knew about it.  But I've recently decided to come back to that game, and I wanted to see what you thought of it. study

The story is simple:  You get lost in an infintely repeating hallway, and you can do stuff.  Eventually you find a shrink ray, which lets you do more stuff, and the narrator... well, the narrator is just a jerk, to warn you.  The game is highly size oriented, so I figure any Gulliver fans will feel used to it.  Shrink  There are a bunch of actually kind of gruesome bad endings Death , and it's a long route to the good ending.  So if you need any tips, just PM me at any time.  I'll be quick to respond. Wink

I was also wondering, should I attempt to add images, or should I not add any images?  By images, I mean pictures of the rooms you walk into.  I'm just curious at this point, and I don't have anything in mind for another update in recent time.

Click here to play, and thanks for the feedback! Giant Spin

You type "Get up from chair".

Do you use the buttons on the side, or are you typing everything?  I'm just kind of curious.

And... well, you need all of those for the good ending.

Well, certain things do require typing, such as use and give.

A lot of the problems are with the parser - it's just not very smart. And that causes a lot of problems with trying to figure out things. Such as "stand" being the obvious way to get out of the chair not working. I would suggest using TADS3 or Inform 7 if you really want to work on a game. (Side note, I am coming from a background of having played text games in the past, so I have a decent idea of puzzle solving and making things feel linked somehow)

Well, the program the website uses requires people to make up the verbs themselves... *shrug* I was mainly just using the websites software, so I'm both limited by the program and by my comparatively inadequate puzzlemaking skills. Plus, it requires verbs to be linked to nouns, and "stand chair" doesn't really make much sense. Not much I can do to fix that one.

I wonder if you recommend that I give this a try at some point?  If it ends up being a little too convoluted, though, I'll probably side with Lom as far as finding a better venue to do these text adventures.

Anyway, I'll let you know if I get a chance to take this for a spin.  And I may or may not yell at you too depending on the nature of these "bad endings".  Wink

That's one of the beauties of Inform 7 - it's really structured to be a "natural language" language, allowing people who aren't really into programming to design some interesting things. I'll copy a quick example below:

The Stateroom is a room. "Staterooms aboard a spaceship, even one as luxurious as the Thaleia, are tight, cramped affairs, and this one is no exception. There is barely enough room for you and the furniture. The door to the hallway is locked tight for now. East is your bathroom."

The Bathroom is east of the Stateroom. The description is "Like your stateroom in smallness, only moreso. There is a mirror on one wall."

Those two paragraphs define 2 rooms you can walk between, with some verbose descriptions. So you can see how powerful a tool it could be for making stuff.

I think the hobo is Mario, it's just a guess.

Okay!  I managed to give it a little whirl so far, it's rather cute. ^.^

Granted I haven't finished it by a long shot, and only got so far as meeting the tiny family inside the dollhouse, but it's entertaining.  The commands were difficult to guess at first so it was frustrating... but then I noticed that the side panel already provides inventory, object interactions and potential commands to use.  Maybe purists would say that defeats the purpose of text-based adventures, but to that I say... piffles! I started enjoying it more with that command information available. ^^

Keep up the good work, Rad. Smile

I honestly had some fun playing this. Lom showed me a text adventure game a long time ago and I enjoyed it. Also I couldn't figure out how to give the bow of pasta to the hobo. :T

Do "give bowl of pasta to hobo" in the text bar. Some commands you have to type out.

I doubt he never found out; after all he did say he enjoyed the game, and before the pasta giving there's nothing you can really do.
