Early Preparations for a 1.7/1.8 World!
Alo people! ^^
We're still on the verge of a 1.6.4 update for Gulliver, but thanks to significant base code improvements we may not have to wait a very long amount of time for a 1.7 update. Even if we do, I think it's important that some groundwork starts to get laid to ensure a smooth transition into a 1.7 world.
The reason we're preparing anything at all is because we have a No Block Left Behind policy in place. Whatever you built now WILL still be there when we upgrade into a 1.7 world -- and if it's not, we can bring it in later. Here at Big Sis, we don't believe in the destruction of the world to suit the interests of a few bored individuals -- all buildings are sacred.
What I plan to do then is to create my "Cia's Ark" in a way... set a hard border encircling a huge portion of our map, stretching from the upper corner of Glasgrow all the way down to the lower corners of the DRC Spawn. Anything that exists outside of that border will be relocated into it (and yes, there teleporters will also be adjusted to the new locations).
In this way, we allow for a safe building area that people can create their houses and towns in without fear of being left out of a 1.7 upgrade. And once we DO update to 1.7, it's a simple matter for me to just delete all Region files that fall outside of that border, and let the rest of the world spawn in new 1.7 (or 1.8!) chunks. Can't get any easier than that!
Just as a quick illustration, this is what our world looks like now...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ds7pv0cy57exr9/Map_20140908.png?dl=0
And this is what I propose for Cia's Ark:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zval473f8yuhwwt/Map_20140908_Proposal1.png?dl=0
Again, don't be afraid if something you like falls outside of the Ark... I can always use my fancy bread magic to move it inside. There's still plenty of time to do so, so we have more than enough time to get everything safe and sound into the Ark.
Any questions, thoughts or concerns, please let me know here.

Oh and to add to this, I already set the borders of my "Cia's Ark" in place. They are marked on Dynmap, but if you need some proper coordinates...
Northwest Corner: -3584x, -3584z
Northeast Corner: 4096x, -3584z
Southeast Corner: 4096x, 4096z
Southwest Corner: -3584x, 4096z

Sounds like a very good idea, I do have a question though, I was planning on building a little vacation house /cottage/boat/airship or something up on an island or above the middle of the ocean and that would probably be outside of the Cia's Arc borders. Would it bother you if I commenced the construction of it before the great flood (update), or can I build it wherever and it can be moved in for update and out for after update, if any of this is a major problem or annoyance I understand adn can build it elsewhere. Thanks for your time and I like your policy. ~Iceman13590

The answer depends purely on how easy you won't to make things for me... either way, it's coming with us.
If it's a floating thing like an airship, though, we can probably negotiate importing it over the 1.7 world, which qill still mean some work for me, but not a whole lot. ^^

Oh yeah, another precondition to the Ark is that it can have no unexplored chunks within it. Any black fog you see on Dynmap has to be cleared away for this plan to work.
So you explorers out there have a job to do! Please help clear out those unexplored regions within the confines of the Ark (use the Dynmap markers to help. That will be a huge help.

Ok thanks Cia, I will see what I do. Did I just here you say it is a good idea to clear away the unexplored fog? I did some of that a while ago, I will help you explore and maybe leave my mark in some places along the way. I would love to be one of those explorers so count me in.

Aye. But remember. .. ONLY WITHIN THE ARK AREA!
Any unexplored chunk explored in the outer world will just fatten up my server and will make me sad. Not that you're above making me cry of course, hehe. XD

I don't think there is any need to flip out TOO much yet because it will still be a good while I believe before a 1.7 update. But Good work and good ideas Cia and Ice. Props to you both!

So, just to confirm, Shurikin(?) Island will make it. Also, about the nether, will the blaze farm and cobble room be continued or wiped?

Any town or structure that exists outside the Ark region will be preserved by physically moving its location. However, for this to work I have to be aware it exists... Shurikan Island is easy, but others may be harder to spot or import. Prior to any kind of update, it's probably prudent to carefully review things.
And yes, nether and end stuff can be preserved too.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I've packed my bag and got my ticket right here! Let's boat out!
I might've forgotten my life preserver though...

Right, I'm going to explore the leftover foggy areas today. Hopefully that will be done and sorted soon enough.

Thank you Jammy! Remember to make use of /tp as you're doing that. Shouldn't be much left, mostly in the Northwest region.

Okay, so today I took the first step towards importing some of our outlying builds into the Ark region. I began with something simple... basically moving Cloudsdale over to a new location, including shifting its teleporters and dynmap label.
The move was a success and I'm sure I'll be able to do the same with other minor landmasses like this, so stay tuned for further news. ^^

Laputa, Lacus and Elysia have now been moved as well, freeing up a whole ton of new chunks that can now be used for other awesome things... like biome imports. ^^

A quick update, but I've moved a whole bunch of other high-profile areas, such as Monster Island, the Cheese Quest House, and the Class Select Cloud.
Next up is a challenging one.. the Arena and new fairgrounds. But that one is the last major thing to relocate since Shuriken Island is an island (and hence easy to move), and Night Land can wait until it gets its moat. ^^

And the Arena and New Fairgrounds and Shuriken Island have all been moved into the Ark!
And that should about do it for all the major areas on the map, except Nightland and the Royal Fortune, as well as unmarked houses and such built outside the Ark region. I won't try to relocate these yet, only upon request of the owner.
And that should do it for Ark preparations on my end... I'll focus the rest of my mcedit efforts into importing new biomes and structures. <3
